Upselling

I just realised I don't "upsell" myself enough, which could explain a bit... well, a lot actually. When you walk into a fast-food resturant they say "Do you want fries with that?" And of course six out of ten people say yes before they realise that they have just order something they don't really want.
Now, people generally like me after they get to know me and people typically will enagage me for a few moments after meeting me. So all I need to do is upsell myself to get me over the hurdle between these to points.

Plus I am more likely to get a root if I just ask females I think are interested in me. That might help.

How will decide in his case?

Looks like feeding tubes are catching on. Who gets to say when they pull the tube on him?

Soundtrack to the War

I remember a Late Show sketch about returned Vietnam vets. Amongst the guys they "interviewed" was the guy who was too young to vietnam and only got there in 1982 when he got lost on a Contiki tour. But the best line in whole sketch was the Vet who said don't make war happen, not because of the killing and fighting, but because the soundtrack would be so shitty. After watching a film called "Soundtrack to War" the other night, I would have to agree that Vietnam had the better soundtrack.

Most people would have seen some of this film as a lot was used by Mike Moore in Fahrenheit 911. There is some dispute about whether this was done without premission or with it.

Job Applications

They are giving me the shits. Why do they are all ask the same stupid questions. Is it just because they can't be bother actually asking Questions that might be of some value? I mean as if people aren't going to lie when asked "Explain a time when you showed independent thinking"? When I decided to answer you stupid questions honestly.
"Leadership is important to us. What leadership roles have you had?" I was School Captain, President of the Young Capitalists and I was the first person to declare that three quarter pants look stupid.
"What do you look for in a Graduate Program?" I do not know I haven't done one, so I don't know what to look for.
"Why do you want to work for us?" I don't, but if you give me a job my opinion of your organisation might change.

How often do you hear someone complaining about the quality of graduates nowadays? Maybe if they stopped testing people with these stupid questions and actually test people on their ability to solve problems. The people they get clearly just know how to study for these questions.

Crap Ads on TV

The new "Just Right" ad on TV is really giving me the shits. The ads states that "according to research young Australians want to take care of themselves, but still want a little indulgents." And "Just Right" happens to be "just right" for this. Why on earth do I need research to tell me how I feel? Why the fuck would I need to know that if that was how I truely felt? Why don't they say "if you want to take care of yourself......... eat Just Right". Fake research like this gives me the shits.

TV ratings shit me too. They do the same sort of the bullshit. The fact that some program has a half million viewers in Melbourne, means that everyone is watching it. Bullshit. I have never watched American Idol, My Resturant Rules, Lost or any other crap on TV that my generation is supposed to be in love with.

Lightfoot is right about one thing

Despite his lack of ability to work as a secert agent, Senator Ross Lightfoot is right about one thing. Kurdistan should be allowed to gain independence if Iraq collapses into a failed state. Despite what all the right wingers out there say, some of us live in the real world and can see that it is unlikely that the three groups Iraq are going to be able to come sort of love in in the near future.
So are we then going to allow the bits of Iraq which are calm and locally governed to be forced to remain part of a failed state just because it does not suit the Saudis, Americans etc. Those Kurdistan could be forced to be a state like Somaliland which is the northern part of Somalia that has formed into a well governed and reasonable peaceful state that the world says not exist. International efforts are undertaken to attempt Somaliland to rejoin the rest of Somalia which is still ruled by various warlords because Afircan dicators beleive in maintaining the borders that were left when the Europeans cleared out in the second half of last century.

Bracks is off the tracks

I heard Steve Bracks on the radio the other day and all he did for me is re-enforce my disappointment in the Victorian Labor government. Back in 1999, I was extremely glad when his party and him were surprisingly elected.
They just put out more and more spin and try to avoid being bagged on talkback radio. His stances on the teacher who has been banned from teaching is just plain lazy. All this government cares about nowdays is not losing the next state election. Well, they have lost my vote and I would often have been considered a rusted on voter.
I hate Doyle and his Liberal buddies who still think that Jeff was unfairly dumbed by Bracks is no better now. If you going to have bastards in government, one might as well have the true bastards.
P.S. I'm going to hate doing it but I am going to vote Green. I feel so unclean.

Don't love Spelling mistakes

At some stage in writing this blog I have misspelled Gonorrherra. Now someone has clearly been looking for information on this, but have misspelt it as well (as Gonaherra).

Footy on the TV

People from other states think Victorians are made when it comes to our following of Australian Rules Football, known mainly as Footy. Anyway, the TV rights for next year are up for grabs. What happen five years ago was SEVEN had the rights and NINE and TEN outbid them. Now, the five contract is up and it is time deal again. However, TEN has jumped ship to get into bed with SEVEN and unless NINE can afford to dig real deep, it looks as if footy is back on SEVEN. So in honor of this I am play "Fanfare for the common man".
One of the major problems with footy on NINE is that they show both the rugby league and AFL in the northern states. So they show the local league matches in primetime and AFL in the middle of the night. This is not really what the AFL wants as these are suppose to be the growth markets of the game. SEVEN doesn't have this problem and NINE really struggles with having their cake and eating it too.
Plus NINE employs that wanker Eddie McGuire, but that is a different story.

Witch Burning

I am a little worried about the direction that this country is headed. We seem to be in the middle something that is very much like the Selma Witch Hunt of 1692. I am talking about the crazy lengths we are going to stop pedophiles here in Australia. Now, don't get me wrong: Pedophiles are dirty fucking dogs who prey on the most innocence members of society.

Yet, some of the steps are just causing more problems than they are worth. For instance, to be a teacher in Victoria one has to join the Victorian Assocation of Teachers which checks both qualifications and police records. I have no problem with that except that it does not allow people like this teacher to explain themselves. It turns out that he only touched his girlfriends breasts when she was two months away from being of the age of consent and there was not any sex at all. Yet, he is banned from teaching for life.

Likewise, MediaWatch the other night got stuck into the West Australian for creating a fear campaign about staff being pedophiles at one of Perth's main hospital. It turns out there was actually not basis to any of these claims. Some related to instances that happend 15 years ago and other cases related to misuse of the internet, which did not involve child porn as the West Australian claimed. Making stories like this up is dangerous and stupid. It is a bit like the boy who cried wolf: One day people will stop listening. Then true cases will be ignored which will be ignored.

Perhaps, we have just gone a little overboard on this whole issue as a society.

UPDATE: Mr Lefty has said it much better over at his site. He also makes the point about photographing children now days is looked down upon. Parents have been film their childrens swimming sports for years and there has never really been a problem. Even if some pervert does use the photos or videos for some sexual purposes, it is not as if they are actually harming the child then.

Skills shortage: Part 2

It turns out that we are not only short of skilled workers, but also unskilled workers. And the government wants to revamp IR laws to allow lowerer wages. Hello, anybody home? You are short of workers so you except to be able to get people to work more by paying them less. More likely you are going to lose workers (most likely you best workers) to other businesses who are short of employees and are willing to pay more. I think the government is just not thinking really hard on this issue.

Near to full employment does mean that wages will rise, that will in turn mean that inflation goes up, meaning interest rates rise and demand for housing fall and people have less money to spend, meaning fewer builders and workers are need, causing a halt to the rise in there wages. One would suspect that it works in cycles and is really not that complex.

In the article cited above Costello makes the point that number of people on the single parent payments has double in 20 years. The population was 14 million in 1984 and is 20 million nowdays: A 42% increases. So although doubling sound impressive, what we have is really a less dramatic rise from 1.7% to 2.3% of the population being on Single Parent Payments.

What that articles really says is Costello is a dipshit.

False Hope

You know when you are on a plane, the flight attendent goes through the whole deal about how to put on the life jacket in case you crash in the ocean and need to float. Only three times in history has a large commerical aircraft managed to ditch in the sea and had anybody surivive. The plane has never in fact remain intacted and therefore the rafts have never been used. Given that the number of jets that have crash into the ocean, this would suggest that the odds are not very good. I figure that they are around 2%.
Sorry to be so gloomy. I wonder why I don't fly?

UPDATE: More research has just uncovered that some commerical planes have a air ram turbine. This is used when a plane runs out of fuel to provide power to the cockpit. This has happen twice and both times worked.

Downer

Okay, look I don't like Alexander Downer but that doesn't mean I am planning on shooting him or anything like that. Suggestions like that are just silly and dangerous because you can never be sure if they are listening with a little help from them. The last place I want to end up for my rantings on political nature (with poor taste remarks about Ash's sex life thrown in for good measure) is here.

But seriously we could start a blog that just hangs shit on Downer. Hey it would get more hits then this rant fest.

Back to Iraq

I opposed the Iraq War on the several grounds:
1. I didn't believe the WMD stories.
2. I didn't think the US knew what they were getting into.
3. There was no consenus on the issue between the world powers.
4. There was no plan for the aftermath of the main battle.

And I think was right on these points. However, what is done is done. The dead will remain dead and the living will have to put the pieces back together. And now is the time to do that.
And for that to succesfully happen, there is going to need to be a concenus amongst people. However, Australia's Fuckwit Minister Downer takes that approach "We were right to support the war and you were wrong to oppose it. But we want you to come on board now." Now I am sure that is going to get people on side. At least some Americans have at least been saying "It doesn't matter if we or you were right in the past, what matters is that we would like you help us now" which I think is going to get more people on side. I am ashammed to be have Downer as a minister in government that represent me overseas.

The kind of help you don't really want

If I was this family I think I might be saying "Thanks, but no thanks" too. I am not big on the adding to the cycle of violence.

Revolution 9

I was listen to the second disc of the Beatles' White Album yesterday and I listened to Revolution 9. This got me thinking does this track have any musical merit or is it just John Lennon having a wank?

The myth of the shortage

John Howard reckons I should have done a trade when I finshed high school. Gee..... I wish he had of told me that 1998 when I choose what course I was going into. Oh.... That is right, I did Information System because that is what the government reckon Australia need then. There was supposed to be a shortage of IT workers then, just as there is supposed to be a shortage of trades people now. I wonder how long this shortage will last. I remember there was IT grads get jobs paying 60K in there first year. Now we hear of tradesmen earning 100k a year and brickies earning a $1.20 per brick. The government is just talking bullshit as per normal.

What are we doing on Tuesday?

Consider my readership is really small I figure I might as well ask Ash what we are doing for his 26th Birthday on Tuesday?
Is the North Fitzroy pub crawl still on? Because I am feeling like I should be waking up in a gutter as it has been a good two months since I was really drunk. Being off alcohol has resulted in me gaining weight. Isn't suppose to happen to smokers, not drinkers of alcohol?

The Grand Prix run by Grand Pricks

It appears that FIA, the world motor racing body is not pleased with the Victorian legal system. My advice to the state government to stand up to these pricks. The laws of state are already bent for this stupid race. I mean they still require tabacco ads to be shown on the cars which is the only place one can see an ad for ciggies nowdays. Now they want to make sure that the race will be exempt from all the laws of the state so they can have their dull old race.

Skills shortage

I am I the only person in this world with half an fucking brain?
Australia is supposely in a shortage of skills workers and the government answer to this is to blame young people for going to university instead of doing a traditional trade.....
Why does it take 4 years to learn a trade when it only takes 3 years to get a basic degree in Arts, Science or Commerce (and that can be fast tracked if one does summer subjects and overloads)? Surely trades would look more attractive to more young people if they took less time to do. Sure, there are things a bricklayer needs to learn but one can be educated as an Engineer in same time.
In the past, when the majority of people did not go past year 10 at High School there may have been reasons for such a length time because they needed to learn some of the things which they now learn at school. So it shouldn't be too hard to reduce the time it takes to become a Welder, Bricklayer, Fitter and Turner, Plumber or whatever.....

Anyway, I had my first real taste of management today and I can't see how hard that can be (Plus the $285 for the days always helps).

I'm Back again

Back in the big black smoke. Don't have much to say about my say at the farm. A bit dull and I drink too much with the old man. Well, not as much as I used to drink as a younger adult but you get the idea.

Anyway, I am back in Melbourne and all that has change is that Asho is needing to grow a good old fashion porno moustache. Perhaps like this guys:

Happy hunting Asho.
